Sketch

“We still believe in the viability of dreams, in and through and around the stuff of daily living, and even as the bedrock for our most solid practicalities. Dreaming is a dangerous proposition; it dares us to risk everything, to walk blind into the hills, to do the hardest work in ourselves and in the world–and to reap the richest reward. Sometimes, possibly, our dreams urge us to reveal ourselves intimately to an audience of strangers, and hope they’ll meet us where we most want to be.” – hib & KiKa (off the map)

Recon Jack

Photo of Brad's Tattoo.

This weekend I was lucky enough to learn about the Recon Jack image from Brad – thank you. Brad recently finished his service and is going to school now. The image basically represents being a “Jack of all Trades.” The parachute and wing represents the airborne capability, and combatant diver on the other side represents diving capability.  The the three bullet holes in the forehead and crack along the skull all have their own separate meaning. It is an amazing image and I feel lucky to know about it.

The image became even more powerful when I heard the creed. I think anyone who has faced challenges in life can relate and feel empowered by it.

THE RECON CREED

Realizing it is my choice and my choice alone
to be a Reconnaissance Marine,
I accept all challenges involved with this profession.
Forever shall I strive to maintain the tremendous reputation
of those who went before me.

Exceeding beyond the limitations
set down by others shall be my goal.
Sacrificing personal comforts and dedicating myself
to the completion of the reconnaissance mission shall be my life.
Physical fitness, mental attitude, and high ethics –

The title of Recon Marine is my honor.

Conquering all obstacles, both large and small,
I shall never quit.
To quit, to surrender, to give up is to fail.
To be a Recon Marine is to surpass failure;
To overcome, to adapt and to do whatever it takes
to complete the mission.

On the battlefield, as in all areas of life,
I shall stand tall above the competition.
Through professional pride, integrity, and teamwork,
I shall be the example
for all Marines to emulate.

Old Halloween Costume – Painting

Scary?

Scary?

So much color - fun...

Color is fun...

Fun stuff and kind of scary!

This is not one of my favorite paintings ... but it's very Halloween ... (from around 1997)

I was into crazy hair back when I first got started in painting… It’s normal to use yourself as a model when you are learning. No one else wants to sit that long! The expression is one on concentration… also a reflection of what it feels like to try and paint…

Fun with color!

Old Painted Faces

September 30, 2009 foreverbird Leave a comment

I have been thinking about painting faces… and so I took a few pictures of my old paintings tonight. The style changes so much from one face to the next…

Made while I was living in Italy - age 17.

Self-portrait was one of the first oil paintings - made around age 15.

One of my first acrylic paintings - made at age 14.

Made right after college... age... um.... 22.

I got to see Margie Nelson at the Vineyard House in Santa Ynez…
